Prior to becoming a coach, I spent over 20 years in educational technology, most recently as an Executive Producer, which was a mid-level management position. I carried my own projects as a project manager, working with clients to refine their requirements and to come up with a plan that was achievable within the time and budget we had. I then led the creative and technical teams to create the project. I also managed other producers and participated in steering the company’s strategic plans. In my first few years there, I was criticized soundly for helping other people too much. So, I doubled down to be sure I got my own work done, but I couldn’t help myself… I still helped people. At about the 3 year mark, management started to notice the people I was helping were getting further faster, and they started to give me people to mentor. That went well enough that eventually, they asked me to create a training program, to teach all the producers in the company the skills I had been mentoring my own staff with. I absolutely loved seeing the new producers find their own styles of leadership and succeed and get promotions.
